Summary

This is the unfettered story of Ashneer Grover-the favourite and misunderstood poster boy of Start-up India。
Raw, gut-wrenching in its honesty and completely from the heart, this is storytelling at its finest。

A young boy with a 'refugee' tag growing up in Delhi's Malviya Nagar outpaces his circumstances by becoming a rank-holder at the pinnacle of academic excellence in India-IIT Delhi。 He goes on to do an MBA from the hallowed halls of IIM Ahmedabad, builds a career as an investment banker at Kotak Investment Banking and AmEx, and is pivotal in the making of two unicorns-Grofers, as CFO, and BharatPe, as co-founder。

As a judge on the popular TV show Shark Tank India, Ashneer becomes a household name even as his life turns upside down。 Controversy, media spotlight, garrulous social media chatter descend, making it difficult to distinguish fact from fiction。

Not much interesting apart from his journey in BharatPe。 Everything else is like a resume read out aloud。 Avoids going into nitty gritty of other businesses and only highlights his contributions。 Also doesn't reflect on his mistakes and weakness like most other autobiographies。 Says his only weakness is trusting easily。 Not much interesting apart from his journey in BharatPe。 Everything else is like a resume read out aloud。 Avoids going into nitty gritty of other businesses and only highlights his contributions。 Also doesn't reflect on his mistakes and weakness like most other autobiographies。 Says his only weakness is trusting easily。 。。。more

Great read。 I found it authentic and compelling。 It’s a well-detailed account which builds up a complete picture of Ashneer’s life story。 It highlights the recent controversy and informs it with his events prior to that。 I was fascinated by his journey into the startup world。 His work ethic is genuinely impressive。 I think there were even more missteps not discussed in the book (not red-flagging misogyny in an employee who later turned against him), as there often are in hindsight。 It is a short Great read。 I found it authentic and compelling。 It’s a well-detailed account which builds up a complete picture of Ashneer’s life story。 It highlights the recent controversy and informs it with his events prior to that。 I was fascinated by his journey into the startup world。 His work ethic is genuinely impressive。 I think there were even more missteps not discussed in the book (not red-flagging misogyny in an employee who later turned against him), as there often are in hindsight。 It is a short, intriguing read。 Ashneer with all his receipts clearly comes off as a man who was tricked in an intricate plot and who is ready to boldly back up his claims on his point of view。 I also enjoyed the pearls of wisdom listicle at the end。 I’ll be following the real-life events around the controversy now。 。。。more

This book tells how he went on to create BharatPe, and eventually ends by mentioning what went wrong in the company and how his own investors betrayed him。 But Nothing conclusive could be found because we don't know the other half of the story, i。e。 of the investors and co-founders。At the end of the book, Ashneer put forward a few learnings from his personal and startup life。 I consider these points as the best takeaways from this book。 。。。more

Ashneer Grover has been in the media for a while now, thanks to his stint on India’s Shark Tank alongside the exaggerated incident about his rumoured abusive audio clip which culminated in his exile from BharatPe, a company that he had co-founded。 So it was an apt time for him to launch a book that would act as a tell-all。 In Doglapan, Grover does not shy away from naming names and pointing fingers at people whom he thinks wronged him。 That makes for good gossip material。 Along the way, he narra Ashneer Grover has been in the media for a while now, thanks to his stint on India’s Shark Tank alongside the exaggerated incident about his rumoured abusive audio clip which culminated in his exile from BharatPe, a company that he had co-founded。 So it was an apt time for him to launch a book that would act as a tell-all。 In Doglapan, Grover does not shy away from naming names and pointing fingers at people whom he thinks wronged him。 That makes for good gossip material。 Along the way, he narrates his journey in the corporate and business worlds where he left a bank in a good role, joined a startup and helped it race forward, and then co-founded another successful startup。 Grover, true to his personality, is blunt, overtly arrogant and unforgiving。 A few stories clearly feel incomplete as they are narrated from only one person’s point of view who clearly believes that he can do no wrong。 But through this book, Grover also gives some sage advice that may act as the kindle that lights the fire of entrepreneurship in someone’s heart。 Overall, the book is a quick read, keeps the reader interested in the narrative, though lacks the well-roundedness that a good ghost writer could have brought about。 。。。more

title "DOGLAPAN'' on the cover of the book, which gives a hint that the book is full of self-boasting, but it is justified as he achieved his success through sheer hard work。The book is written in a rough manner and contains poorly formed sentences but has a good vocabulary, which appears to be a case of force feeding。 I frequently had to consult the dictionary because the words used are not as straight-forward as the sentence structure。 There is always more motivation to be found in reading about entrepreneurs' lives than in the lectures of a motivational speaker。 Ashneer's story is also inspiring, and it motivates the readers to pursue their own entrepreneurial dreams。I disagree with the widespread assertion made on social media that this book only tells one side of the story。 I don't believe there is anything more to say about the other side of the story because it has already been covered extensively in newspapers and on national television。 The mainstream media already presented the other side of the controversial story featuring Ashneer, and this book provides his defence against the allegations that maligned his public image。Ashneer rose to public fame really fast through Shark Tank India, but his public image got maligned even faster by his ex-colleagues and co-founders at Bharat Pe, the company that he built brick-by-brick at a super pace。 He was betrayed and fired from the company he was a co-founder of。 The most typical illustration that comes to my mind is Steve Jobs, who experienced a comparable circumstance。 The only thing Ashneer could do to defend himself and present his side of the story, given that the mainstream media was already against him, was to write this book。 He rose in fame along with the book。 He appeared in a few podcasts on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram after the book's success, which increased his popularity among the general public。 He was adored by the Shark Tank India audience for his straightforward demeanour and clever dialogue。 With this book and the podcasts that followed, he was able to win back the people's love to such an extent that the second season of Shark Tank India without Ashneer as a Shark seemed flavourless。 This is confirmed by the never-ending posts on Facebook and Twitter。Let me now give a brief summary of the book。 The author began recounting details of his early life in this book。 He was a third-generation Pakistani refugee who was born and raised in a middle-class family in Delhi。 He graduated from a renowned English Medium School and then pursued his dreams of studying engineering at the IIT Delhi and management at the IIM-Ahmedabad。 He began his career with Kotak Bank as an investment banker, where he worked for about 7 years, handled a number of mergers and acquisitions, and established himself as a respected figure among venture capitalists and investors。 He left Kotak and went on to work for AmEx India before joining Grofers as a CFO at a very early stage of the company。 He raised money for the company through several rounds of funding and increased its valuation from $35 million to $370 million in just nine months before being asked to leave。After being out of work for a while, he joined "PC Jewellers," a Lala company。 At PC Jewellers, he started a new gold-loan vertical and digitised the company's core jewellery retail business as well。 The stocks of jewellery companies, including PC Jewellers, suffered after the news of the PNB fraud involving Nirav Modi was made public。 As a result, the banks decided that all credit lines extended to jewellers needed to be withdrawn。 Ashneer decided to resign from PC Jewellers after the company lost all hope of obtaining an NBFC licence to launch a gold loan vertical。 Soon he joined an early-stage Fintech company, “BharatPe," as a co-founder, which was practically not doing any business before he joined it。 He built it from almost zero to a $2。5 billion company before he was given the most controversial exit of the Indian startup ecosystem。You should read the story of his controversial exit for yourself because it's quite fascinating。 Every accusation made against him has a written response from him。 The book ends with a listicle of five things that propelled Ashneer towards success and five failings that led to his downfall。 He hopes his learnings can make a difference in the readers' lives。 。。。more

Interesting read but still fail to understand why Ashneer didn’t take legal recourse to defend himself。 If everything he said in the book is correct, he should have taken the other Board members to court。

This book reveals the bright careers of IIT-IIM throughout。 I hesitated to read this book when I read the reviews。 But this book is good though the main focus is on the author's biography。This book is, in fact, about the journey of various successful fintech startups and serves only as inspiration, but dumb startup founders can't copy this model。 This book reveals the bright careers of IIT-IIM throughout。 I hesitated to read this book when I read the reviews。 But this book is good though the main focus is on the author's biography。This book is, in fact, about the journey of various successful fintech startups and serves only as inspiration, but dumb startup founders can't copy this model。 。。。more

Read this for entertainment not for learning。 And it’s not even that entertaining。 This is more author’s PR than a genuine biographical account。 Basically sets him up as a victim fighting the system。 Would have appreciated and rated it more if he included lessons around business or learning from his own mistakes。 Reading this account , if you asked him about his weaknesses he would probably say that he’s too nice。

Ashneer’s unapologetic attitude is praise worthy, but this book is nothing but a complainant’s attempt to discredit others and prove himself right。 Maybe he was right at the time, and maybe people did wrong by him, but I expected this book to be a bit more about entrepreneurship and not just the forced slander。The writing is quite lazy as well。 Totally skippable。
